Donna Leon's Comissarrio Guido Brunetti Mysteries: Uniform Justice

The Germans Understand Donna Leon
Uniform Justice is one of the Donna Leon's mysteries we missed reading. In German with subtitles, the plot is wonderfully revealed. The acting is superb. The Venetian scenery nearly steals the show. We get to examine the secrets of a military school where thugs are abusing fellow students. Commissario Brunetti persists despite his superior's fears of offending the gentry. His teen son shadows him for a day and his partners prove indipensible.

Learn How To Sail - with Penny Whiting

great video!
Great video for the beginner! Good for sailors that need a brush up on spinnaker handling and reefing. Well done.

a lot of information, but some went over my head
I am learning to sail and thought I'd give this video a shot. I like the way Penny presented the information, but you need to have some background knowledge first.

This video is an excellent tutorial for beginner and a grest review for experienced sailors. Highly recommended as Penny explains and demonstrates her instructions clearly for complete understanding.

Yankee Stadium: The Golden Age

Superb
This video took me back to the golden age of baseball. A time when it was a game first and a business last. A time when most of the players were moral, dedicated and hard-working men and not rich, spoiled, drug-taking, tattooed street thugs. Enjoyed some never-before-seen clips of vintage baseball games and it's true heroes. Just my opinion though.

Yankee Stadium is Sacred
The stadium is home to the most successful sports team in historical times and it stands alone as the epic place to watch a game, a fight, a mass by the Pope, attend the wake of an immortal player and any other event. My favorite place! This film brings all of the fore mentioned into a fine focus!

Coming To Light: The Edward S. Curtis Story

Awesome and inspiring documentary!
Total awesome, informative, thought provoking, and inspirational! I wish you had it in DVD format, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Good balanced view of the subject.
Curtis produced a twenty volume photographic record of Native Americans that was both art and a record of a vanishing people. This documentary tells the story of his life and how he went about taking these wonderful pictures. There is also commentary by Native Americans on the work...both positive and highly critical. This balanced video is well worth seeing. It is actually streaming on netflix for free as of Feb 2013. I definitely want to find access to these photos to get a bigger view of Curtis' works.

Enjoyed it.
Without Edward Curtis taking pictures a lot would have been lost about the Indians. I can't imagine living in those times and being an Indian who lived off the land and had strangers coming in killing off their food supply and not to mention killing them off! To bad the invaders of THEIR land couldn't see the good in them and worked with them, not against them. History of these great people, how they lived, died and survived should never be forgotten.

The Naked Brand

ceo hubspot
The best analogy for this movie: "An Inconvenient Truth" is to the environment as "The Naked Brand" is to marketing.

A valuable blueprint
Sarah Kavanagh is a living embodiment of The Naked Brand. This 15-year-old from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, recently used an online petition to help raise public awareness that Gatorade contained an ingredient also found in fire retardants. Ms. Kavanagh adds yet another proof statement to The Naked Brand's central message that corporate advertising must now contend with its most formidable competitor ever: the informed public. Tautly written and handsomely executed, The Naked Brand provides a multitude of examples of how the consumer's ability to communicate via social media and other online channels has elevated the customer experience to be the most important component of a brand. The Naked Brand doesn't use agitprop to make its case, but carefully and creatively piles one case history atop another to demonstrate why global corporations can no longer claim excellence but must now demonstrate it. Fun to watch and thought-provoking, The Naked Brand offers a blueprint on how...

Supremely watchable for its serious subject matter
I've had the pleasure of watching the film several times now, and I have to say that I am still surprised at how entertaining this movie is. At roughly 57 minutes, it clocks in a little short, but the material is extremely concentrated. Some really great interviews with industry figures and eye-catching motion graphics make this one of my top documentaries of the year.

Detective Montalbano: Episode 22 - The Age of Doubt

one of the best
great suspend, a little bit of all the ingredients which makes the series a success. Sicilia all over, great, great.

It's A Cultural Thing
We usually enjoy movies from other cultures, if only to see the differences between cultures. This series was new to us and well rated, but we found it slow moving, verbose, and 1970's sexist (compared against our current standards.) There was no on-screen violence or nudity, but lots of discussion. The pacing reminded me of our daytime soap operas.
This isn't a bad movie, just probably not as enjoyable to U.S. viewers as British or Scandinavian movies, IMO.

Detective Montalbano: Episode 18 - August Heat

Hey, It's Italian, Isn't the Reason Enough to Love it!

This is Sicilian dialect, and a little fast, but bits and pieces come through that can be understood.

Check it out..

Salvo conquers again
Another fine story with our Sicilian hero scoring points against crime and in favor of passion. He is, of course, a man.

great series but too expensive

Detective Montalbano: Episode 16 - Track of Sand

Avanti!
If you're reading this, chances are you don't need a lot of back-story on the wonderful Italian program IL COMMISARRIO MONTALBANO. You already know about Detective Montalbano (Luca Zingaretti), the eccentric Sicilian police investigator who juggles crime-fighting with a personal life that can only be described as...well, involved. So let's cut to the chase and get to the episode itself.

"Track of Sand" opens, as do many episodes of this series, with Salvo Montalbano discovering a crime quite literally on his doorstep -- in this case a dead horse which has been brutally killed on the stretch of beach just behind the deck of his home in Vigata. Suspecting the horse-slaughter may be linked to underground races controlled by the Mafia, he launches an investigation which brings him into contact with the sultry equestrian Rachele Esterman and her enigmatic husband, Saverio Lo Duca, who may or may not be connected to either the Sinagra or the Guffaro Mafia clans. Certainly someone...

Montalbano!
Always great! Wonderful acting and dialogue, and beautiful sets and scenery. We hope one of these days Amazon makes all of the episodes available for instant watching.

Typical European Drama
Have to have a little sex on the side to make it worth watching, I suppose. The script goes so fast it is difficult to read the subtitles in time for the next scene. I kept having to "rewind" just to finish reading. The hero needs to wear platform shoes.

Ben's Vortex

Great Documentary
I just finished watching my copy of Ben's Vortex. It is a compelling story for sure. I have to think that those who have spoken badly of this video have a personal interest in the story. I can see why some of the information would be disturbing to a grieving family. Personally I am glad that the makers of the video did not sugar coat the facts in order to please people. There are things in the movie that certainly will not be pleasing to Ben's family. There are also things that the cave diving community (which I am a part of) are not thrilled with in this video. To me, it is a good sign that a documentary about a mysterious case ticks everybody off. It means the film doesn't pander to one side or the other. There were no quality issues with my video whatsoever. The underwater shots are superb. It is a compelling story and I am sorry for the family and all those who have been affected by Ben's disappearance.

Intriguing - worth watching for sure!
Just watched the film for the first time after following the story through the news and am even more fascinated by the story. The movie is well put-together and seems well-researched; the fact that there is open discussion about the different possibilities makes it so intriguing. I really appreciate the integrity of the film makers; even as a non-scuba person, the explanations of more technical aspects of the story are clearly explained along the way. I was drawn in by the "if this, then that" thought process that is elaborated upon by the film makers; I recommend this film to anyone with interest in the story, in cave diving, or just in mysteries in general.

Great underwater footage and a compelling story
I thought this was a well done film that tried its best to show all sides of a complex story. Our family watched it together, and we were all riveted to the twists and turns in the case, as well as the beautiful underwater footage.

As for the reviewer who claims that only fans of Jill Heinerth would give positive reviews, I'd have to counter that he must be a friend of Ben's family in order to feel the need to belittle anyone who enjoyed the film. I am not a cave diver nor a fan of Heinerth; and I didn't come to the story with any preconceived ideas. There were absolutely no problems with poor quality production or sound problems either.

This was a great film that tried its best to give an accurate, unbiased and interesting account. I consider it well worth the money spent.

Super 8 [HD]

Entertaining, engrossing and extra-terrestrial - Derivative but from the very best
Super 8 is admittedly not a perfect film, but I enjoyed it so much, and was so taken by the characters and the actors playing them, that I didn't really mind the occasional inconsistency or lingering "awed expressions" scene.

Set in a small town in Ohio in 1979, the basic plot centers around Joe Lamb (Joel Courtney), a 13-year-old boy whose mother recently died in a factory accident, leaving him with only his father, Jackson (Kyle Chandler), a sheriff's deputy who's a more than decent man but who has never known how to really be a father. Jackson's escape is burying himself in his work, while Joe's is helping his best friend Charles (Riley Griffiths) make an amateur zombie movie with the help of their other friends Preston (Zach Mills), Martin (Gabriel Basso) and Cary (Ryan Lee). But Joe's involvement becomes truly committed when Charles persuades Alice Dainard (Elle Fanning), a girl he secretly has a crush on, to join the project.

Things taken a sudden turn...

This movie is "Mint!"
I saw Super 8 at IMAX today. LOVED it and want to see it again, soon! I laughed, I cried, and I jumped up out of my seat 8 times! It was a fun, fun nostalgic ride on an early summer afternoon. The late 1970's music, costumes, location, and set props were right on. Fantastic cinematography, sound design, and special affects.

Ahhhh, but this movie has heart in the story and in the acting. Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning, and the new young actor who plays Joe Lamb steal the movie. This 'coming of age' story is set in a more innocent time, before middle schoolers began 'hooking up.' The rest of the kids who make up the motley film crew are believably hilarious. Each cleverly has his or her own specialty in film making. You can only imagine a young JJ Abrams doing the same thing when he was a boy.

Super 8 is not the BEST movie I've ever seen, and the ending is somewhat predictable. But it is the BEST movie I've seen in a long, long time.

1 of the Best films I've seen in 2011 - 5 Stars for both movie and blu-ray transfer
First off, I just finished watching an advance blu-ray copy of this film and the movie and blu-ray transfer blew me away. IMO, this film is one of the very best of 2011 and if you are a fan of "old-fashioned" type drama/suspense films that have to do with extra-terrestrial life and what happens to a small rural community in the late 1970's is truly a film that will stay with you long after the movie's end. To give any more away would be a sin, so I won't.

The blu-ray video and audio is fantastic. The aspect ratio is what appears to be 2.35:1 or thereabouts (Amazon has it wrong at 1.85:1). The video throughout is pristine with vivid colors in the daylight scenes and ink blacks in the night scenes. Details are vivid as you would expect from a top-notch blu-ray transfer. The audio equals the quality of the video and I've had to monitor the volume because I live in an apartment and use a 9.1 speaker configuration. Vocals came mainly from the center speaker along with the...

Tea Party - Reformation Tour: Live in Australia

Best Canadian trio since RUSH!!
Ahhhh, this really brings back the memories! Fond recollections of the Tea Party playing several smokin' concerts in very small clubs here in Burlington, Vermont (in fact, their debut album "Splendor Solis" was recorded right here!) I always thought they were an absolutely killer band live, but all along, there was no live album or video concert to remember them by - until now! In front of a packed Aussie audience of rabid fans, the band rips through a selection of songs from just about every phase of their career, and even includes a nice acoustic-based set. But as I've wondered many times before, why these guys never took over the world is beyond me! A combination of Led Zep crunch (along with a similar bent towards Middle-Eastern textures) with a singer who more often than not sounds a lot like Jim Morrison fronting a hard-rock band, these guys have been making great albums, and performing kickass shows for years, yet have remained relatively unknown enough to lead them to their...

Repeated viewing is a MUST! TURN IT UP!
Jeff Martin is right! Women are the better half. My wife turned me on to these guys a few years ago knowing I was a big Zep and Doors fan! Its like having the best of both worlds but make no mistake Tea Party put their own style on this wonderful DVD. Songs like The River and Save Me for me at least sound better live than on record. The sound on this DVD is incredible and as good as ay DVD I have minus Pulse. For those of you who say these guys are lame or unoriginal get over yourselves! This DVD is true Rock N Roll the way it should be. Jeff is a great host and his comments are both whitty and funny to listen too. For a three piece the sound is big and Zeppelinesque in a GOOD way. Jeff Burrows and Stuart Chatwood are a powehouse rythym section and compliment the multi talented Martin well.. They are back he says for good! Lets hope that is true and for a very long time!

Play It LOUD!
I remember back years ago hearing some pretty good songs by The Tea Party but that was the extent of it. Always on the look-out for concert blue-rays to watch on the home-theater I decided to pick this one up. Great decision. This one packs the Wow factor & makes me wonder why I don't have a single one of their albums. These guys are totally under-rated & this b/ray delivers top-notch audio & video. Play this one LOUD & enjoy the trip.

Unknown

This got so-so reviews but I thought it was a great film
"Unknown" is a wonderful suspense/thriller action-er that finds (the always excellent) Liam Neeson's Dr. Martin Harris fighting an identity crisis as another man (Quinn) has taken his identity after a car accident. There is a twist that I have to admit that I figured out fairly early in the film. However, that doesn't take away from the film. It all plays out very well. The movie is based on the French novel Unknown: A Novel by Didier van Cauwelaert, and there is no lull in the film. This is probably the best suspense action film I've seen so far this year. Definitely a film that should've had much better reviews, "Unknown" delivers the action, drama and suspense that you want in a film.

Taken into the Unknown
Unknown may be marketed as a sequel of sorts (at least in tone) to Liam Neeson's surprise hit of a few years back, but this is not the action packed thrill ride that Taken provided. This film is about 75% mystery/thriller and 25% action. In fact, there were only a couple of fight scenes and one neat car chase to fill in the gaps when the pace needed picking up. I agree with the other reviewer here who said they wished the twist came earlier and left more time for Neeson to kick some serious booty. Speaking of the twist, I couldn't figure it out and I felt it worked really well.

Liam Neeson once again proves to be an unlikely yet very believable action star. You can't help but root for this guy. I hope he continues with these types of roles every so often. January Jones and Diane Kruger are here to look good, but only Kruger has a character worth any interest. There is a quiet scene with Frank Langella and Bruno Ganz that stands out.

Taken or Unknown? Which one do...

WILL THE REAL MARTIN HARRIS PLEASE STAND UP?
Along with his wife, Liam Neeson is in Berlin for a biotech conference. He forgets his briefcase at the airport and realizes this when they arrive at the hotel. He takes a cab ride back to the airport to retrieve the briefcase and has an accident along the way. Four days later he awakens from his coma, after being dead for 7 minutes. He has no ID. He goes to the hotel where he sees his wife, except she is with a man with the same name as his (Martin Harris) and he claims that he is her husband and his wife likewise makes the same claim! At this point I was divided as to what is going on. Is this a Twilight Zone where a guy goes to an alternate reality? Maybe a "Dark City" experiment. Is this an elaborate hoax? If so why is his wife a part of it? Maybe they decided to remake Hauser's Memory (am I showing my age?) Or none of the above? Liam contacts the underground in Berlin to help him find out what is going on.

The acting was good, as expected. The chase and action scenes...

English Vinglish (2012) (Hindi Movie / Bollywood Film / Indian Cinema DVD)

Beautiful & inspiring
Wow, this movie is so beautifully put together - its breathtaking! It's easy to get completely wrapped up in the storyline although still hard to watch how this woman's family put her down for her inability to speak English (I found a lot of little life lessons that can be taken away from this story - ie: To be understanding of those that seem "different" than whats perceived as normal, to think about what we're saying to those that we love, to respect people from all walks of life). Despite all the poking fun of, the lack of time that her husband has for her & the disrespect her daughter shows ... this woman is a woman in every sense of the word - She's vibrant, smart, caring, loving, compassionate & gentle. She has a childlike innocence to her, coupled with passion & inner strength to find & love herself. There are a lot of comedic scenes that will have you laughing & It's clean so, your whole family will be able to enjoy together (it will be hard for anyone who cannot read the...

Great Movie, Great DVD product, Excellent seller

Sridevi vs. the English language
I guess, one day, Sridevi Kapoor - but just "Sridevi" will do, thank you - surveyed her demesne and decided to heck with her fifteen year hiatus from cinema. I think I'm on firm footing when I say that I'd put Sridevi's scintillating performance in English Vinglish against whichever other best you can come up with for 2012.

It's a crap title, but that's the only negative thing I can think of about the movie. In an ocean of redundancy, English Vinglish surges against the tides. Does it add flavoring to learn that writer/director Gauri Shinde made the film in part as an apology to her mother, on whom she based the central character? Like the character's daughter, Gauri as a child was embarrassed of her mom's poor grasp of English. And here we were some years back, hailing Esperanto as the universal language.

In India, Shashi Godbole (Sridevi) is a dedicated housewife and devoted mother, never mind that she's marginalized by her husband (a smug Adil Hussain) and...

IMPROVE YOUR SAILING SKILLS

Pretty Good Stuff
I have been helping our marina start a sailing school and we have been looking at/for training material. This does not take the place of good classroom and on-the-water training but it is very informative and good for the novice sailor looking to take their knowledge to the next level. The description of the spinnaker use was very good and many of the sail diagrams were very well illustrated. I like it.

helpful but low production cost
if your staring out sailing or just thinking about it this is a very informative film worth watching. It helped point out knowledge I was weak in and has improved my fun on the water.

Good essentials of sailing a large cruising sailboat
Good essentials of sailing a large cruising sailboat. Actually could be a decent primer for someone learning to sail, or coming along as crew. At the same time, it is funny to watch the "way cool" late eighties - early nineties styles and social sensibilities. How is it that the women on board aren't deemed capable to take the helm or skipper?

ANNAPOLIS: HEAVY WEATHER SAILING

Good Advise
Wished I had seen this movie back when I was sailing regularly. I could have handled rough seas better using the knowledge shared in this movie. I would recommend this movie to anyone planning any off-shore sailing.

Sailing in heavy weather
I've not done as much sailing as the gentleman in this video. I have however sailed in small craft advisory periods in boats up to 25' and as small as 8'. Some of the things he says I have found to be untrue. A good figure 8 knot has never come undone on my boat, and the way he has lines scattered haphazardly all over his do nothing really but present a major trip hazard to anyone on board. With that being said, he offers some good tips on some points, but misses the mark when it comes to really providing a good overview of the proper prep for heavy weather sailing.

Very instructional
This is not necessarily an easy to explain matter, however, the author is providing secure tips on how to handle the vessel in storm situations. I think that the product provides a good and sound practice to overcome such situations with a degree of confidence and safety. I recommend this one.

Uninhabited

Amazing Visuals but an Average Story
For being a straight-to-DVD movie, Uninhabited is surprisingly excellent when it comes to the cinematography. Otherwise, it's a pretty standard haunting flick, just with a different setting than other ghost movies. Uninhabited is about an attractive young couple that take a vacation to a deserted coral island on the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. But it isn't long before Harry and Beth discover that they may not be alone.

Despite this being a low-budget movie shot with a skeleton crew, the visuals really stand out. The footage of the Queensland, Australia beach is beautiful, and makes for an interesting setting to a ghost movie. Uninhabited marks Aussie director Bill Bennett's first return to shooting a feature film in over eight years. So it's refreshing to see this quality of directing for a simple horror flick.

The bad news is that the concept of the film isn't incredibly original. While most haunting movies don't take place on a deserted island, the...

Uninhabited
Bill Bennett's holiday horror tells the story of a young couple Beth (Geraldine Hakewill) and Harry (Henry James) who are taken to an isolated island near the Great Barrier Reef for 10 days of quality time together, including a spot of fishing, relaxation, exploring and a spot of romance. The couple are not on the island long when a series of strange events begin to befall them and they soon realise that they are not alone!

After a steady start, the couple are victims of what they believe are children playing pranks. Wandering into the forest on the island they find a cabin with an archaic diary and outside a grave marked with the name Coral. Despite their search, Beth and Harry cannot find the children they suspect they can hear laughing. They do have an encounter with two fishermen who don't speak English and this only serves to unnerve them even further. When their phone goes missing and Beth is unable to bring a premature end to the holiday, the couple are faced with...

This is a wonderful movie
I loved this movie. Nothing really graphic. A few F words by the guy with a gag on his mouth, but mostly just a uniquely interesting horror film. I've never seen anything quite like it. The only part that confuses me is why the "ghost" goes after Geraldine Hakewell in the end. A slight bit slow at times, but I enjoy this type of movie. I have patience. Still a movie I would recommend to all horror fans.

Cracking Up (1983)

...Happy
This movie is The Jerk times 10! I forgot how funny Jerry Lewis is - can we just address the hospital/Krishnamurti scene or the workman on the head phones? Red slippery floors make me laugh. It's like sunshine....

a cult classic for my family!
My siblings and I watch this movie practically every time we go home to visit. We have loved it since first seeing it over 20 years ago. Today, our conversations are sprinkled with phrases such as "No. Anesthesia. Please. Boing.Boing.Boing.Boing." and "OW! That HURTS! Are you NUTS!" Then we are all laughing like crazy!

And every time I get on a low-cost airline I think of Willy Wehawkin and my hand naturally curls! But my favorite scene is definitely Jerry in the French prison planning his escape! Jerry is brilliant and appreciated by so few...

For the more objective review:
The movie definitely has some slow points but just keep watching. As in most stand-up comedy routines, the jokes have a way of coming up later and catching you off-guard. (i.e. the annoying waitress, Jerry getting punched each time he lights up, Jerry falling down...often!)

If you hate Jerry, you probably will hate the film and there is nothing I can say to convince you...

The Schtick Bible
Before I review this movie, I shall put myself in to a catatonic state where I shan't feel anything, nothing whatsoever. ...Selaai! Selaai! Wulupu. Wulupu. Wolick! Wolick! Mummy, mummy. Punt! Punt! Saleemeeni! Saleemeeni! Foyneen, foyneen. Momeeeennnn...

I will begin. I know what the following reviewer is referencing, but it's a horrible paraphrasement: "Moeg1@hotmail.com from New York City , August 6, 1999 Funniest movie of all time. Jerry Lewis was not only at his best in this film but his style is considered timeless. I found myself laughing out loud for most of this film. The Last of Sheila (1973)

CLEVER, FUNNY, AND JUST FABULOUSLY SCRIPTED!
If you love mysteries and are tired of the brainless detective films being released on a regular basis these days, you OWE it to yourself to watch this taut yet darkly sardonic thriller!

The Agatha Christie type script (Death on the river Nile, for instance, where many plausible clues are dropped for attentive members of the audience) is nothing if not supremely intricate and as much of a guesser as I am, the film has me riveted every time I watch it.

With the possible exception of Welch, who may be guilty of being somewhat deadpan as the glam queen, almost every other actor comfortably nails his role. Great timing.

Despite the relatively dry DVD (nothing special in the "special features") I highly, highly recommend this fabulous feast of film. Buy it, for you will watch it more than once for sure.

Finally - the DVD of this wonderful brainteaser of a film
The Last of Sheila is a love or hate for most folks. I fall into the love category. A GREAT cast beautifully embodies the twisted, neurotic hollywood-types in this whodoneit or even whodonewhat for that matter. The screenplay is full of incredibly witty, sharp dialogue and it layers puzzle upon puzzle until the very end. Then - one last joke at Hollywood's expense before the final credits. Coburn, Benjamin, Cannon and Mason are particularly excellent here. Some flashback twists might get confusing, but keep watching - it pays off beautifully. Oh, and Bette Midler's closing credits number is just the perfect iceing on this multi-layered, very dark chocolate cake. Just excellent!

An Evening with Dyan, Richard, and Raquel.
The first wonderful thing about "The Last of Sheila" directed by Herb Ross is that it's a who-done-it of the first order. The writing by Tony Perkins and Stephen Sondheim is masterful and packed with insider Hollywood dish. The cast is second to none and all working at the top of their form. There are a few particular standout performances. James Mason gives us his restrained all in the pivotal roll of Phillip. He adds in the process this film to his long and distinguished list of credits. Raquel Welsh brings out for our appreciation the famous Raqui figure but also in this, her follow up to her first great roll in "Kansas City Bomber", she shows a little more of her range than most expected or allowed her at the time. Joan Hackett as Lee is touching and brilliant in one of the best rolls of her too short career. The incendiary Dyan Cannon inhabits Christine and with her raucous laugh steals the show from everyone with her thinly veiled "Sue Mengers" Agent to the stars turn...

character

Character - a few additions
A few remarks and additions to the reviews so far. - The place where the story is situated is near and in the old harbour in Rotterdam (the Netherlands). It was filmed partially on the fifth floor of an old harbour building, with additional scenes in Antwerp (if i recall it correct), in Germany and in Poland. In Rotterdam, i was part of one scene. As a professional calligrapher, i had earlier prepared several properties for the film, and then was asked to be on stage, too. Mike van Diem made a lasting impression, a friendly and capable director indeed. The hours of waiting, the minutes of shooting, resulted in a few seconds of appearance in the final version of the movie - that's obviously the way it goes. In the last half minute, the hand of Jan Decleir (seemingly - it's actually my hand) writes the signature of the testament. It was a small contribution to a masterpiece, which is strongly based on two novels of F. Bordewijk, 'Karakter' and 'Katadreuffe'. Charakter is the kind of...

Heartbreaking and Extraordinary
It's ironic that "Character" won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film the same year that "Titanic" won for Best Picture. "Character" makes "Titanic" look like a grade-school production of "Gilligan's Island." One of the most powerful films I've ever seen, it was painful and difficult to watch, and absolutely brilliant. With not a false note anywhere, the epic scope of the story, the acting and the cinematography drew me in and broke my heart. Not to be missed.

Packs a Lot of Dramatic Punch
CHARACTER is all about tough love. Extremely tough. It is about family. In this instance, an extremely distant pair of parents and a young man seeking his identlty. It's also about great psychological drama, superior period design and unbelievably assured freshman filmmaking from director Mike Van Diem. It's also, as the title implies, about "building character." The father, Dreverhaven, has some unusual character building techniques, to put it mildly. He at one point tells the young man's mother that he will strangle 9/10s of the life out of son Jacob, but the remaining 1/10ths will make him strong. And just for good measure, he may take the last tenth as welll.
Jan Decleir, as Dreverhaven, is a revelation. He's built like Gerard Depardieu and is even more preposessing than that fine actor on screen. He would make a great Javert or Lear in some future production. Victor Löw, as Jacob's mentor and elder friend, De Gankeelar, is unlike anyone you will have seen on...

Wrestling Ernest Hemingway (1993)

A beautiful film
Echoing the other reviews printed here, I must express shock that more people have yet to discover this painfully honest, quiet, gentle and loving film.

Featuring outstanding work by Richard Harris (this may be his finest performance!, the incomparable Robert Duvall, Shirley Maclaine, and a gorgeous and graceful Sandra Bullock, "Wrestling Ernest Hemingway" also benefits from a solid script and expert direction that allows human beings to truly live.

This witty and softly tragic film contains something for everyone. It is a film about finding soul mates, about love, about facing loneliness and bravely avoiding despair through grace. It is a film about hope. One of the many great crimes in Film history is the fact that so many have overlooked this beautiful and gently profound film.

For its most agreeable price, "Wrestling Ernest Hemingway" (watch the film to get the title's meaning), is a safe and inexpensive gamble. If you are a fan of movies that value...

This is a wonderful movie about friendship and aging.
Walter and Frank are two old men, having nothing in common other than their loneliness. One day they meet in the park and at the time of their first meeting neither of them could guess how good friends they would become. There is not much I can say about this movie, except that it is very, very good. It's a story about friendship, loneliness, life and aging. The screenplay is great (written by a 21-year-old) and every actor is wonderful. Besides the two fantastic leading men (Richard Harris and Robert Duvall), the cast includes Shirley MacLaine and Sandra Bullock, just before her big breakthrough with "Speed".

It's a shame that this movie isn't better known. Everybody should get a chance to see it. Buy this movie. You won't regret it! It's a movie you will remember.

SUPERIOR MOVIE!!! OUTRAGEOUSLY ROTTEN PRICE!!!
Add my voice to the protest on the ABSOLUTELY OUTRAGEOUS PRICE ON THIS DVD!

This is an outstanding movie with Duval turning in an Academy Award worthy performance as a retired CUBAN BARBER (GOTTA SEE IT - but ***NOT*** AT $40!!!! Can you say "STICK 'EM UP!"???) and Harris isn't far behind in the acting deparment. An absolute character driven GEM of a film that you OWE it to yourself to see. BUT NOT AT $40!!!!!

*WHAT EXACTLY* MAKES THIS PARTICULAR DVD COST THIS MUCH???? DOES WARNER BROS. PLAN TO START SELLING DVDS PRICED STRICTLY ON CONTENT NOW? RIDICULOUS!!!

Just say "NO WAY!!!"

Some Mother's Son (1996)

Helen Mirren is always wonderful!
The movie is gripping and tells about the complexities involving the IRA, and the British Government. A heroic tale of men trying to fight for their freedom and the mothers who love them. The movie points out that there are no easy answers to this situation, and there are no winners--only losers, when it comes to war.

Gripping, hair-raising, touching
This film of the involvment and interaction between families in Ireland who lived their political activism and families who tried their best to avoid the conflicts, but are drawn together by circustance, is impactful. The actresses are believable and the topic is straight from the headlines. It is an insight into how you can sometimes not bury your head in the sand, no matter how hard you try. There is also good in the hardcore politicos as well as in the more main stream conservatives. Outstanding film!

Sad but true.
"Some Mother's Son" is yet another in a long list of films dealing with the strife in Ireland. This film is a thought provoking look into the world of the Irish Hunger Strike. Based around the activities of two IRA members who get captured and jailed. They fight for PoW status and begin a hunger strike to win support. One of the strikers (Bobby Sands) is elected to the British Parliament and their hopes are raised only to be dashed by Maggie Thatcher.

If you are into political, humanitarian or real life films, this film is for you.

Berserk: The Golden Age Arc I - The Egg of the King

Amazing Reboot
I'm going to start this review with a bit of backstory. This may be a long read but this is Berserk so I'm going to take my time and get this right.

The original Berserk anime is infamous for its massive cliffhanger ending. I was never into manga until I watched Berserk, then I simply HAD to read the manga, because I literally could not live with not knowing what happened next. The fact that Berserk is one of the most well drawn and well written (if poorly updated) manga series ever made.

For years the fans clamored for season 2, even after it became clear that it wasn't going to happen there were still some hold outs, but eventually even they died out as well. Then the past few years we have started to see a lot of old uncompleted anime series get reboots. Some like Ultimate Hellsing were just what the fans were waiting for, others like Inuyasha: Final Act were rushed and kind of disappointing. But if any anime deserved a reboot, it was Berserk. And now here it...

In this world, is the destiny of mankind controlled by some transcendental entity or law?
I have to admit I was just a tad disappointed with The Egg of The King; mostly due to how the animation could sometimes make it look like you're watching someone play a video game instead of the first part of an animated dark Byronic Fantasy epic. The story is good (if massively condensed) but since this is trying to adapt so much into about an hour and a half-ish some of the characters can come off as one dimensional. If you've read the manga or seen the old tv series (and if you like the old shoes dub you'll be pleased to know they bought back the voices of Guts, Griffith, and Casca) you'll have an easier time understanding what's going on. Be all that as it may I still suggest buying this just so we can (hopefully) FINALLY move past The Golden Age in animated form someday.

For 2 hours-- Pretty fantastic!
I am a huge Berserk fan, so going into this I was pretty skeptical.
In the end, I think this is a great film adaptation of the chapters it covers.
There are some minor bits that are cut from the original anime that may help build a little more of an emotional connection to certain characters, but when you have to condense these chapters down into 2 hours segments - cuts have to be made.
Fantastic job! I hope that WB funds them to keep producing more than the 1st three (which are really just an intro in my opinion.)

The Awakening (1980)

Egyptian Identity Crisis
Egyptologist Charlton Heston has had a string of bad luck, ever since unearthing evil old Egyptian sorceress queen Tara. His wife died in childbirth, and numerous colleagues associated with the find suffered dreadful accidents. Still, the find made him famous.

Eighteen years later, his daughter Stephanie Zimbalist (in her first film role) is coming into her own, and wanting to travel with dad to Egypt and get to know him better - she's often been away, while Heston was making time with his new wife and former assistant, Susannah York, and conducting his lecture tours. Stephanie's a sweet kid, even if she is suddenly developing problems. Seems she doesn't always know where she's been at night - or what she was doing. In fact, she isn't even sure who she is, anymore, half the time.

Heston is equally afraid he is losing his own appreciable mind. He's coming to recognize that he is the fulfillment of Queen Tara's prophecy for her own resurrection in a later age. As before, those near...

A classic
"The Awakening" isn't a summer blockbuster; it was never meant to be. This is a story about an archaeologist trying to break ground despite being the 17 millionth person studying ancient Egypt. He is a believer and his passion consumes him. He is also not a perfect man. He is a man of science who's work defines his whole being. This is why I think the audience may have a hard time warming up to him.
I don't like to give details in my reviews. What this story has to offer is a realistic horror film. Even though there are virtually no special effects, we are still drawn in to a world of silent malevolence.
This is not a "slasher" film. There is much weight given to suspicious happenings and ancient curses that frankly, makes this story much more creepy. There is virtually nothing offered in the movie that I couldn't see actually happening. Not that I believe in curses, but you never know, there are things in the universe that you don't want to piss off. Leave them alone,...

Awake and Watching
The spirit of a dead, evil Egyptian queen reincarnates as the daughter of an archeologist. "The Awakening" is a tantilizing thrill ride complete with incest, betrayal, and murder. A young Stephanie Zimbalist gives an eerie performance as the young innocent daughter who tries to combat the demon within her.

Austin Powers in Goldmember

YEAH, BABY...
My twenty years old daughter and her boyfriend invited me to the movies with them to see the latest Austin Powers film. I went, somewhat reluctantly, as it is not the film I would have chosen, even though I had previously seen the two other Austin Powers films and enjoyed them. Well, am I ever glad that I did! It was, without a doubt, the funniest Austin Powers film to date.

From the great opening scene to the surprise ending, replete with cameos by Tom Cruise, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey, Danny Devito, the Ozzie Osbourne Family, Steven Spielberg, Britney Spears, Burt Bacharach, Quincy Jones, Nathan Lane, Katie Couric, and John Travolta, the film is a laugh riot. Austin Powers (Mike Myers) still has his mojo amd, together with his gorgeous female sidekick de jour, Foxxy Cleopatra (Beyonce Knowles), sets out to rescue his father, Nigel (Michael Caine), from the evil clutches of the notorious Dutchman, Goldmember (Mike Meyers). To do so, they must go back in time to 1975, the era...

More than meets the eye....
There's much more to this movie than might be seen by your average reviewer. Yes, it repeats itself. Yes, it uses obvious gags. But, such is the spirit and style of the Austin Powers series. Myers may reuse jokes, or use obvious gags.... but the point here is that he does them WELL. He isn't repeating material from the first two movies because he's lazy. Anyone who knows him will tell you very quickly that he'd never let that happen... he is doing is because its funny. The opening is an obvious preparation for such total absurdity (and even a mockery of its own popularity) and all references to earlier movies are done with such self-consciousness that he obviously wants us to think about the previous films. He isn't trying to make it seem new.

Its barely a shallow movie, either. If anyone knows the background to the Austin Powers series, you've probably heard about Mike's amazing devotion to his father, Eric. (note the name of the production company.... Eric's Boy) And,...

I Love Goolllldddd(member)!
YEAH BABY!!!! Austin Powers is back, and as funny as ever. This movie features non-stop laughs that will have you rolling on the floor. I swear, what they said is right about how it has more laughs in one minute than some whole films (Zoolander!). Okay, I'll admit that the story is pretty nonexistant (there is some nonsense about a satellite and a meteor), but we don't go to Austin Powers movies for the plot, we go for the jokes, and this one has some killers. I especially enjoyed the opening credits scene with all the celebrity cameos. Dr. Evil (my hero) is funnier than ever, though its Mini-Me who really steals the show. Fat Bastard, while crude and gross, has his share of laughs. But we can't forget Austin himself, now with his father Nigel. Go see this movie if you want to laugh without having to use your brain for an hour and a half. You'll love it.

About Schmidt

A movie for grown ups that packs an emotional wallop
Jack Nicholson shines in his sensitive, tour de force performance as Warren Schmidt, the vice president of an insurance company who finds retirement anything but fulfilling. In fact, his world starts to crumble in short order, along with his relationships, his priorities and his very sanity. A superficial reading would pigeonhole Schmidt as Willy Loman retread, minus the heart condition, but Alexander Payne plumbs deeper emotional currents with this wonderful film - the sort of film that reminds you why you go to movies in the first place. To the director's credit, the film never crosses the line (so common in today's Hollywood "output") of ridiculing its characters and their sensibilities. Make no mistake: Midwestern middle-class values go under the magnifying glass, but just when the viewer starts to feel superior, zing! Payne pulls you back from the brink, and you find yourself caring deeply about Warren Schmidt and his universal predicament. The editing, the supporting cast...

THE UNEXAMINED LIFE IS NOT WORTH LIVING...
This film is about Warren Schmidt, a Nebraskan in his mid sixties, who is newly retired from his job as assistant vice president for an insurance firm. He is clearly a man who is not in touch with his feelings or his life, living it by the book, so to speak. He is disconnected from the reality around him, living as unobtrusively as he can. This is evident right from the beginning of the film.

His life really begins when he retires, as a series of life jarring changes occur. His wife of forty two years, Helen (June Squibb), suddenly dies. She is a domineering woman whom he loved on some level but for whom he was unable to express much feeling while she was still living, even though there were many things about her that irritated him. She, however, managed to have had a secret life of which he had not been a part. It seems that she was not all that satisfied with Schmidt, herself. It is an unwelcome surprise that colors his world when he discovers it but, at the same time, serves...

Facing the "golden" years with sorrow.
"About Schmidt" is a wonderful movie starring the great Jack Nicholson, who plays the hapless retiree, Warren Schmidt. Warren lives in Omaha, Nebraska, and he is put out to pasture after a long career with an insurance company. Warren hates retirement, for which he is ill-prepared. In addition, Helen, Warren's wife of forty-two years, irritates him with her annoying habits and idiosyncrasies. Worst of all, Jeannie, Warren's beloved only child, is engaged to a man whom Warren cannot stand.

When Warren suddenly becomes a widower, he takes stock of his life, and he is appalled at how empty it is. In desperation, Warren starts to write rambling letters to his Tanzanian foster child, Ndugu. (Warren sends the child twenty-two dollars a month in response to a television appeal). Even though Ndugu is six years old and cannot read, Warren pours his heart into these letters as a means of venting his anger and frustration.

Alexander Payne, who directed "About Schmidt" and shares...

Run Ronnie Run

Not as bad as you'd think
Despite Bob and David's own scathing reviews and the at times slow pace of the film, Run Ronnie Run still stands as one of the best comedies in recent years.
Keeping in mind that Bob and David originally wanted to do an entirely different film but were pressured into making a Ronnie Dobbs movie.
Keeping in mind that Bob and David were eventually snaked by Troy Miller when they were barred from partaking in the editing process.
Keeping in mind that the story is thin and the pace fluctuates between raging Mr. Show hyper-irony and dull Hollywood shlock.
It's really not that bad of a movie.
The Thrilling Miracles segment was pure twisted genius.
The 3 Times 1 Minus 1 video was perhaps the most pointed take on...RnB love songs yet.
And the Ass Kicking Fat Kid scene was the best hurried plot resolution device I've ever seen.
Even if the plot was trite, characters thin and the pace slow, the calibre of comedy in this film is still unmatched by any...

A fun Romp with Ronnie
In a day when it's hard to find a comedy that you can actually laugh aloud, Run Ronnie Run is just that. The characters are off-beat, and David Cross is at his funniest in this silly comedy. I highly recommend this movie to anyone that wants or needs a good laugh.

Y'all got fake poo?
As a voracious Mr. Show fan, I had expected that Bob & David's feature film debut (as a team) would be as clever and as funny as Mr. Show, the vehicle that propelled them to cult favorite status.

However, operating under a studio that re-edited and reworked their movie, Bob & David lost their creative control over their project. The result is a movie not worthy of the Mr. Show moniker. Significantly dumbed-down, and played out like a one-note joke, Run Ronnie Run is less like the fresh inventiveness of Mr. Show, and more like one of those tired SNL movies which features a once-brilliant character just going through the motions.

In the end, it's easy to see why Bob & David wanted to discard this film, a mangled version of their concept. Shame on New Line Cinema for tainting the genius of Bob & David, and then shame on them for refusing to issue this film a theatrical release, only to offer the film on DVD for a quick buck.

Still, for Bob & David DVD...

Easy Yoga for Beginners with Christine Wushke

Best Yoga DVD on the Market!
This Yoga DVD is a must for anyone wanting to start a yoga practice in the privacy and comfort of their own home. Christine's guideance through a beginning practice takes away all the fear of doing something so challenging as starting a new exercise program. Her mind body spirit approach helps you use the practice to not only benefit from it as an exercise program but to take the meditative quality of the yoga into daily life and calmly deal with what occurs throughout your day with peace and poise. Simply wonderfuly.

Simple, relaxing and invigorating
After the video was over I was totally relaxed, completely invigorated and wonderfully quiet. It was perfect and simple. I'm a definite yoga lover now!

Need blankets, blocks & a wall for this program.
Though some of this program did not require them, much of it did require blankets, blocks and a wall against which to stretch. It would have been nice to know this at the outset of the routine so that I could have started another one - because those things were not readily available to me. I did enjoy many of the poses/stretches... but there were also many minutes of resting in poses when I didn't have the right equipment available and would have preferred to be more active. Also, some reviewers mention music, but there didn't seem to be any music in this video.

Charro

It's not "Flaming Star," but it isn't "Clambake," either.
Elvis' last few movies seem to be among the better of the lot, and "Charro" is one of them. An obvious attempt to cash in on the "spaghetti western" phenomenon of the late 60's, "Charro" isn't half bad. I get the feeling the original storyline was more mature and more violent, but was watered down to play to Elvis' "family-friendly" audience. Also, it feels as though some scenes were edited out that might have helped the story progress, but were sacrificed either by an inept editor or an attempt to keep the film G-rated. I wager that had the film kept that harder edge, it would have rivaled "Flaming Star" as Elvis' best western film. As it is, though, it's still a valiant effort by a man who so dearly wanted to be taken seriously as an actor but was never given a chance because of a manager who was more concerned with dollar signs than the ambitions of his client. *A NOTE TO THOSE CONCERNED WITH FILM QUALITY* My copy of...

Good Movie BAD QUALITY
This DVD should never have been released like this. The picture is really bad and the sound, it sounds like a record. Some places seem like the tracking is out of order and others you can't make out the pictures. It looks like the movie was taped off tv in wide screen format than it looks as though someone took a camera and put it in front of the tv screen and did a pan and scan version of it. There are lines (like that of a vcr recording) all the way through the movie. The sound drove me up the wall it was so bad. The reason I say it was recorded off tv is because the beginning and the end are cut and before the end theme is over there's a warner television distribution logo. Maybe I'm wrong but the quality just flat out sucks.

The DVD should be called "CHARRED"
I read all the reviews about how poor the quality of this DVD was.Yes- they are absolutely correct.I refused to buy it until such time a quality dvd was released. But I was in an oddlot closeout-type store and guess what was sitting in their "bargain dvd" bin? You guessed it- a brand new,factory-sealed copy of Charro!I grabbed it and saw the price sticker: [$]I own it.It [stinks].The guy who said it looks like they used a camcorder to tape it off a TV screen was pretty accurate. It is hard to believe but I've NEVER seen a VHS tape as bad as this dvd.I can't imagine they went all through the trouble to get licensing rights, copy the film to DVD,design packaging, and set up distribution for something that, when viewed, assaults and insults simultaneously.I spent 2 weeks contacting everyone who would take my call at Graceland,NBC,RCA,Westlake, etc. and the best I could discover was nobody knows the whereabouts of the original print and negative.Perhaps Elvis, not liking what he saw,had them...

Home Alone

Home Alone - Family Fun Edition
On November 21st, 2006, 20th Century Fox released Home Alone - Family Fun Edition. This DVD edition is the long awaited special edition to one of cinemas most adored Christmas films. This edition offers a hefty amount of extra goodies...such as over 30 minutes of deleted scenes, on the set featurettes, new interviews, and a brand new commentary track featuring director Chris Columbus & Macaulay Culkin. I have to say unlike most commentary tracks, this one is actully very informative and very fun. Macaulay and Chris seem to have so much fun watching the film. This edition like the first one is presented in its original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. I read somewhere that the video and audio is updated too, I cannot confirm if it is or not but I read that. If you own the previous edition of this film, it is definately worth your money to update to this. The special features alone warrant a double dip. Also for the hold outs not wanting to buy the film til it got a special edition,...

AT LAST!
Finally Fox studios came to their senses to re-release a childhood classic. Now this re-release does have a substanial amount of bonus features including 4 behind the scenes feature, deleted scenes, 3 trailers, and some trivia games but the icing on the cake is the Christopher Columbus and Macaulay Culkin Commentary. Its good to know that Macaulay Culkin being the highest paid child star back then in the early 90's and still to this date, he is humble enough to go back to his childhood memories. Deff worth the upgrade if you own the previous release..a true classic...

It Will Never Wear Out It's Welcome!
This movie was a favorite amongst many when it first came out in 1990, and more than a decade later, this movie *still* remains a classic, and will continue to be a classic for many more years to come.

The story is simple, really: young Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) is the underdog of the family; always getting picked on by his older siblings, and feeling like an outcast. One day, he gets into it with his older brother, and Kevin ends up being punished. During his punishment, he wishes that he could spend a christmas by himself without any of his family members. Wouldn't you know it - due to his family's carelessness, they accidently leave Kevin home on their way to the airport (to fly to Paris for Christmas vacation.)

And from there, the fun begins. While Kevin is home by himself, two bumbling, nincompoop burglars (played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) known as the "Wet Bandits," set their sites on Kevin's house. When Kevin figures this out, he sets the house up with...

Final Destination 2

It's a hilariously dumb schlockfest, how can you resist?
Be warned, this movie is not remotely frightening. Whereas the first FD attempted to undercut the silliness of the whole concept with some genuinely creepy sequences, this hare brained sequel simply plays the whole thing for laughs, and gets them. In truth the whole film is really nothing more than an excuse to string together some pretty inventive and grisly deaths (its extremely gory for an R rated picture), but the same could be said of a lot of horror movies and it's refreshing to see one so totally lacking in both pretension and narrative logic. The set up is pretty much the same as before: someone experiences a vision of an imminent disaster, narrowly avoids dying and in the process prevents the certain death of several other characters. Death won't give up however, and a series of freak 'accidents' start bumping off the support players. And so we are treated to 90 minutes of splatstick, with death scenes that share the same kind of dramatic dynamic as The Three Stooges or Pink...

A purposely trashy thriller
While Final Destination 2 follows the plot of it's predecessor, the similarities between the films stops there. The teen-melodrama and too good looking for their own good young stars are replaced (for the most part) with well orchestrated accident scenes and some very nice gore effects. It all starts when Kimberly (A.J. Cook) has a premonition of a huge multi-car pile up and inadvertantly saves herself and a few others. And then one by one, death comes calling with some over the top computer assisted and well orchestrated grisly deaths. Ali Larter reprises her role from the first film as Clear Rivers, and Tony Todd returns in his cameo role as well. Director David Ellis has crafted a purposely cheesy, trashy, and fun horror film that both outshines and pales in comparison to the original; and while it is very graphic and grisly for a mainstream horror film, it is never too mean spirited. The Infinifilm DVD is another fine piece of product from New Line (although I personally...

Done with style.
I highly enjoyed this flick. If you're willing to just kick back and have a good time, this is one enjoyable movie. The acting is good, the special effects are incredible, and the plot is actually above average.

Like Final Destination before it, this is a more creative horror film. It's not a hack and slash, but more a dark comedy of sorts. The fun of this film comes not from the events leading to death, but death itself. Luckily there's a large cast and the inbetween time is quite enjoyable.

The scene that puts this movie over the top however, comes right at the start. Just like FD's plane explosion, it sets the pace for the entire movie. FD2's highway scene is simply an amazing event. It's jaw dropping, it's gruesome, and it's fun.

They thankfully went for a strong R rating, and didn't shy away from getting really gruesome. They also threw in biker babe who briefly flashes early in the film, which probably should have been left out. Otherwise though, the suspense to gore ratio...

Razorback (1984)

Better than I expected by a mile
Razorback (Russell Mulcahy, 1984)

I actually rented this looking to see if it contained a long sample from a song of the same name by the band Terror Organ. (It does.) I was expecting it to be another godawful piece of made-for-TV Aussie cinema that ignores Australian film history since, and perhaps before, On the Beach; what I got was a pleasant surprise, to say the least. This was Mulcahy’s first big-screen feature, but film fans will recognize the name as the guy who directed Highlander, Ricochet, and (ironically) the recent TV adaptation of On the Beach; Razorback contains a number of the elements that have made his films above average ever since.

As it is with, seemingly, all Australian films of the past forty years, the first thing most people are going to notice about Razorback is the stunning cinematography, which was obvious even on a well-used videocassette. Whatever they’re doing down under in the growing of their cinematographers, they’re doing it right...

Good, solid B-movie fun.
Razorback is arguably the greatest film ever made about a giant, wild, smart, killer pig with a taste for human flesh.Arguably.All kidding aside if you like horror movies about monster animals with a cool tongue-in-cheek attitude, but with some truly exciting moments (think Alligator)I believe you will get a kick out of this flick. The movie was obviously made on the cheap, but with talent and imagination much like another incredible Australian indie Mad Max.

Original B flick
I first saw this when I was a kid and it blew my minde. I loved it then and still do. Good movie.

Powerboat Navigation With John Rousmaniere

Excellent content; poor disk geometry
This DVD experiences excessive vibration and fails to play in one of my TV's DVD players as a result. Luckily, discs snap firmly into laptop CD/DVD drives, so I was able to prevent the vibration in my laptop. I was then able to burn an exact copy onto a DVD+R. Once I got that hassle out of the way, I was able to watch the copied DVD on my TV.

The content of the DVD was excellent. Bennett Marine's DVDs generally get poor reviews, so I was glad that this was a good one. Sample clips of Bennett Marine videos are available on YouTube, so I already had a good feeling about John Rousmaniere's navigation instruction before I made my purchase.

Not everything sunk in during the first viewing, so I will be watching this multiple times. Watching it several times initially, and then once before each boating season is probably a good habit. For first-time viewers I strongly recommend watching it with a notebook and pencil and taking notes, just like you did when taking...

Intolerable Cruelty

Coen Farce
There is a point in Intolerable Cruelty where George Clooney is giving a key note speech professing his love that is long enough to make you suspect the Coen brothers have "sold out" into schmaltz. Wrong! The film, in typical Coen style, dives into as many twists and turns as is needed in a good thriller. Fortunately, the film is a comedic farce.

Clooney plays Miles Massey, the most prominent divorce lawyer in southern California. A man so good at what he does he has a prenuptial contract named after him. Massey's good and he knows it. Near the beginning of the film, he and his assistant, Wrigley (Paul Adelstein), are chatting about how boring Massey's life has become while a sweating client sits between them as the client's wife describes how she was used as a sex slave. Massey is that confident of himself.

And confidence is what Clooney is all about. He is simply incredible. Swaggering around like a peacock while checking to make sure his teeth are clean, Clooney...

Friends don't let friends miss Coen Brothers' films...
Intolerable Cruelty has to be the funniest film I've seen all year! Fans of the Coen Brothers will instantly love this fast paced, witty and surreal piece of cinematic genius, brilliantly directed, fantastically scripted and incredibly intelligent. While the idea of Clooney and Zeta-Jones fogging up the screen in a romantic comedy turned me off so much that I missed this in the cinema, now I've seen it I can't believe I had so little faith in Joel and Ethan. The Coen's didn't write the story, so this is sadly no Big Lebowski or Fargo, and some of the characters are a tad unsubtle (Cedric the Entertainer's private dick, the half-dead head lawyer and Clooney's sidekick come to mind) but they did have a hand in the screenplay, and therefore the dialogue sparkles with the typical Coen shine. I think the best scene for this is during Zeta-Jones' first divorce, as Clooney, his sidekick and this Client, in strained whispers, discuss their experience with the Judge ("Have you sat before...

uneven film with a most beautiful woman
I doubt that there are two more strikingly attractive actors in movies today than George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Zeta-Jones, in particular, has the kind of classic beauty that puts her right up there with the great screen legends of all time, women like Ingrid Bergman, Natalie Wood and Audrey Hepburn, who, with their ravishing good looks and photogenic quality, came to define the ideal of female pulchritude in their time.

Credit the Coen Brothers, who made "Intolerable Cruelty," with having the good sense to know what they had in these two stars and for exploiting it to the full. They have allowed the actors to play off their good looks, most especially Ms. Zeta-Jones, portraying an icy gold-digger who specializes in marrying rich men with the express purpose of taking them for everything they've got once the marriage is ended. Clooney is the first-rate divorce lawyer who finally meets his match when he falls under the spell of this strangely bewitching woman.

Split Estate

Great documentary. Moves the group towards understanding
I am involved in the anti-fracking movement in our area. Have shared this with
a group and they were moved to understanding and action. There is no way to
fake these moving scenes of sick people, bubbles on fire, etc.
A great companion piece to Gasland. This one focuses a bit more on health.
Highly recommended.

So scary!!
This can happen to anyone living in the west, before you buy real estate, check to see if you own your mineral rights!

Scary but true
This is a must see for everyone,it is abit inteimdating to know the truth but we must all open our eyes. The seller was very professional and sent the product straight out.

The Polemic Language of Genesis

Much better than some other video lectures comparing Genesis to other creation stories
I viewed this lecture "The Polemic Language of Genesis" after starting to view "GENESIS WITH ANNE GRAHAM LOTZ". Dr. Neiman's lecture is better by far. Dr. Neiman provides an interesting, insightful and thoughtful analysis of how the creation stories of other cultures compare to that of Genesis. He neither discounts or dismisses the other stories but instead provides rational and reasons why they exist and how they differed. The other lecture mentioned above instead simply, and without support, conclusively dismisses the other creation stories as being something that no one could intellectually believe because they are so silly. This latter type of discussion provides little additional insight and itself lacks rigor. I recommend Dr. Neiman's lecture, if nothing else, for its intellectual honesty and academic insights.

Rachel, Rachel

EXCEPTIONAL CHARACTER STUDY
Paul Newman made his directing debut with this story and he does a great job; whenever it threatens to bore, something always saves it. Rachel teaches by day, wearing simple, practical dresses and her hair up. By night she caters to her domineering mother by preparing refreshments for her parties. This sexually repressed spinster schoolteacher, however, gets one last chance at romance in her small Connecticut town. Woodward mixes just the right amounts of loneliness and sweetness in the leading role. Won Golden Globe and New York Film Critics awards for both Woodward and her husband Newman for best actress and best director respectively (they took home four awards between them).

Joanne Woodward is terrific!
This is a quiet, insightful film that is blessed with a wise and wonderful performance by Joanne Woodward. Directed by her husband, Paul Newman, this film explores the plight of a 35-year old woman who has come to the crossroads of her life. She is a decent, lonely and loyal person who realizes that she must make a major change in her life, or continue an unfulfilled and sterile existence in a small town that offers her no chance of real happiness. Paul Newman really shows his skill as a director in bringing this story to life. Here, Joanne Woodward proves that she is one of the finest, if not THE best, actress of her generation. She makes the viewer care about Rachel Cameron; you feel her loneliness, her despair, her fears, and finally, her hope for a better future. Woodward's skill as an actress has always been her courage to portray unglamourous, real women with all their imperfections and foibles. This is a great performance. The ensemble supporting cast in this...

Rachel, Rachel, A Triumph!
It was so important to Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman that they make "a little film that meant something", that they didn't even take a salary from Warner Brothers. Also, they invested much of their own money to get its deep message across.

This incredible film from 1968 continues to stand the test of time. Woodward received a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her sensitive portrayal of Rachel Cameron, a 35-year-old New England spinster who lives with her domineering, possessive mother. Rachel's world is very limited, due in part to her mother's constant nagging and neediness, and Rachel's own-self doubt. This is the story of a lonely, isolated woman who looks to find love with a man from her haunted past and how she breaks out of her shell. Early on, finding a man and having a child is the only way Rachel knows to find validation and meaning to her life. By the end of the story Rachel realizes that the only person that can give her true validation is herself...

Abraham the Patriarch

Absolutely wonderful and informative.
This is an actual collegiate lecture delivered by Dr. Neiman. He is very well informed and nicely conveys the information to the audience. I learned so much from this lecture, as well as his other videos.
